What Is Data Size Converter?
A data size converter translates bits and bytes into both decimal storage units and binary computer-memory units. The distinction matters when a storage product uses GB but a software tool reports GiB.
Decimal vs. Binary Units
Decimal SI prefixes use powers of 1,000. Binary IEC prefixes use powers of 1,024 and include an "i" in the name:
- 1 KB = 1,000 bytes and 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes.
- 1 MB = 1,000 KB and 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB.
- 1 GB = 1,000 MB and 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB.
- 1 TB = 1,000 GB and 1 TiB = 1,024 GiB.
