What Is Grade / GPA?

A Grade Point Average (GPA) is a standardized number used by high schools and universities to evaluate a student's overall academic performance. A GPA calculator helps you track your current standing and plan for the future, whether you're calculating your current GPA or finding the grade you need for a target GPA.

The Standard 4.0 Scale and How it Affects Your GPA

This tool uses the standard, unweighted 4.0 scale utilized by most academic institutions:

  • A: 4.0 points (Excellent)
  • B: 3.0 points (Good)
  • C: 2.0 points (Average)
  • D: 1.0 point (Below Average)
  • F: 0.0 points (Failing)

Note: Your GPA is "weighted" by the number of credit hours a course is worth. An 'A' in a 4-credit science lab affects your GPA much more than an 'A' in a 1-credit physical education class.

Target GPA Planning: Find the Grade You Need

In addition to calculating your current GPA, this tool features a "Required Grade" mode. By entering your current GPA and a target GPA you want to reach, the calculator will tell you exactly what grades you need to earn in your upcoming classes to hit your goal. Use this feature to strategize your academic performance and maintain scholarship eligibility.

How To Use the Grade / GPA Calculator

  1. Choose the mode: Calculate GPA (for current performance) or Grade needed (for a target GPA).
  2. For 'Calculate GPA': Add each course with its letter grade and number of credit hours. The GPA calculator will display your cumulative GPA.
  3. For 'Grade Needed': Enter your current GPA, current total credits, your desired target GPA, and the credit hours of your upcoming course. The calculator will tell you the grade you need.
  4. Use the Example button to load sample values, or Reset to clear all fields.
