What Is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple numerical measure that compares your weight to your height. It is widely used by medical professionals and organizations like the WHO as a quick screening tool to categorize individuals into different weight brackets.

BMI Categories

  • Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
  • Normal weight: BMI 18.5 to 24.9
  • Overweight: BMI 25 to 29.9
  • Obese: BMI 30 or greater

Limitations of BMI

While BMI is a useful general guideline, it does not directly measure body fat. This means it has significant limitations: athletes with high muscle mass may be classified as "overweight" or "obese" despite having very low body fat percentages. Similarly, older adults who have lost muscle mass might fall into the "normal" range while actually carrying excess body fat. Always consult a healthcare provider for a comprehensive health assessment.
