What Is Body Fat Percentage?
Body fat percentage estimates how much of your body weight is fat rather than lean mass. It can add context to weight or BMI, but any tape-measure estimate has measurement and formula limitations.
The US Navy Method for Estimating Body Fat
This calculator uses the US Navy tape-measure method to estimate body fat from a few circumference measurements. It does not replace a clinical assessment or a direct measurement method.
- Men: Requires height, neck circumference, and waist circumference (measured at the navel).
- Women: Requires height, neck, waist (at the narrowest point), and hip circumference (at the widest point).
Accuracy and Usage of this Body Fat Calculator
Results can differ from DEXA, hydrostatic weighing, or other methods. Repeating measurements under similar conditions may make the numbers more useful for tracking a trend, but a change does not prove a specific change in muscle or fat. This is an estimation tool, not medical advice.
How To Use the Body Fat Percentage Calculator
- Select your biological sex (male or female).
- Enter your height in centimeters, and then your neck and waist circumference in centimeters.
- If you are female, also enter your hip circumference in centimeters.
- Ensure measurements are taken accurately: neck at the smallest point, waist at the navel (men) or narrowest point (women), and hips at the widest point.
