What Is Body Fat Percentage?
Knowing your body fat percentage gives you a much better picture of your physical fitness and health than body weight or BMI alone. It distinguishes between the weight that comes from fat and the weight that comes from lean lean mass (muscle, bone, water).
The US Navy Method
This calculator uses the US Navy Tape Measure method, which is a highly accessible way to estimate body fat without expensive equipment. It requires simple circumference measurements:
- Men: Requires height, neck circumference, and waist circumference (measured at the navel).
- Women: Requires height, neck, waist (at the narrowest point), and hip circumference (at the widest point).
Accuracy and Usage
While not as perfectly accurate as a DEXA scan or hydrostatic weighing, the tape measure method is fantastic for tracking trends over time. If your estimated body fat percentage is trending downward while your weight stays the same, you are successfully losing fat and gaining muscle (body recomposition).
How To Use the Body Fat Percentage Calculator
- Select sex and enter height in cm.
- Enter neck and waist circumference in cm (and hip for women).
- Measure at the narrowest/widest points for consistency.
- Review estimated body fat percentage.
